An
Environmentalist, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has urged the Delta State Government to
immediately implement the Asaba Capital Development Bill by establishing the
board for the development of Asaba.
Speaking to journalists
at Okpanam/Asaba Road one of the flood prone areas of Asaba at the
weekend, Onuesoke said that the establishment of the board would help in
checking natural disasters such as flooding and erosion in the city.
While commending
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for initiating the bill, Onuesoke said that the
governor’s initiative would be meaningless if preventable natural disasters
such as the flooding occasioned by heavy down pour of Thursday July 2, 2015
could not be prevented.
He advised residents of
Asaba against building, erecting structures or disposing refuse into natural
water ways, saying that doing such would result in blocking of drainages and
eventually cause flooding.
While sympathising with
victims of the flood he urged Deltans to take the monthly environmental
exercise seriously. He also tasked the various local government councils in the
state to ensure that the drains in their areas are regularly cleared of refuse.
He advised the town
planning authorities to be mindful of giving approval to houses so as not to
distort the master plan.
